Show details: Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art

Curated by Tiffany Boyle for Mother Tongue, artist Stacey Tyrell works primarily with photography, producing works which explore race, heritage and identity.

This display at Pig Rock Bothy – which is the first presentation of her work in Scotland – will include images from two different bodies of work, Backra Bluid and Chattel. Both examine the historical links between Scotland and the Caribbean, with specific reference made to slavery, colonialism and industry.

Though Tyrell was brought up in Toronto and is currently based in New York, her roots are in the Caribbean island of Nevis, a location which provides the inspiration and backdrop for much of her work. The exhibition is accompanied by a commissioned essay from Glasgow-based writer Cassie Ezeji.
